My Buffie is a Bichon Frise, is 13 now (Born December 13, 2002) and weighs about 15 pounds. She eats Purina DCO, 1-1/2 c. per day, divided into 4 feedings, with 1/2 c. chopped celery or broccoli mixed in.
Insulin: Was on 10 units Humulin U (Ultralente) 1 x a day originally. Changed to Humulin N on 10/24/02 -- started at 4 units 2x per day; current dose is 5.5 units in a.m. and 4 units in p.m. Treats: Eukanuba Restricted Calorie Rewards (2 per day:1-1/2 at bedtime and 1/2 in early a.m. if UG is completely negative). Also likes raw celery or broccoli, chopped very thin, and frozen green beans. Other supplements: One cranberry capsule, 1/3 mixed with food 3x/day and one Omega-3 fatty acid capsule (mixed with food) in a.m. She was diagnosed in March of 2001 so is going into her 6th year with Diabetes and still doing great! Re: Poll: food and insulin

I have been experimenting the past couple of weeks with Chris' diet.
There are times when I'm concerned that he's getting too much dairy with nearly half his meal being cottage cheese so have been looking for a kibble to try as a replacement. And then Canidae changed their canned Chicken, Lamb, and Fish and it didn't seem to work as well for Chris with the new texture. Pre-experiment diet: 1/3 cup + 1T canned Canidae, 1/3 cup cottage cheese. Limits for him - no soy, no barley, oats questionable The prohibition on barley eliminates quite a few kibbles, including all of Innova's except the grainless. Kibble - only one tried so far has been Innova Evo. This seems to be working well for him. I calculated the calories and replaced his 1/3 cup of cottage cheese with 1/4 Innova Evo. Before the ACTH test, he was getting pretty even numbers with it. I am a bit concerned about the fat content, so yesterday I picked up a small bag of the Evo Reduced Fat and will try that. Canned Canidae Canned - Chris has eaten both Chicken, Lamb & Fish and Lamb and Rice. Before the change, both worked well for him. The texture of the new version of the Chicken, Lamb, and Fish is coarser and has quite a few whole rice kernels. This seems to be affecting how he processed the food. Eagle Pack - Chris tried both the beef and the chicken and his blood sugar seemed similar to on Canidae. Looked like he needed at tad more insulin with this food as the canned component. I wound up rejecting it mainly because I didn't like the way it looks.... :) I know, it shouldn't matter. But it wasn't doing anything stupendous for Chris' BG and I find it hard to feed him something that I don't like the look of. It also is difficult to get - only one store with limited hours. Innova Senior - This is what we are set to try next. I haven't calculated the calories yet so not sure how similar it is to the other canned foods we have tried. It is relatively low in protein and fat compared to other canned foods - 4.4% protein and 3.2% fat - and has a bit more fiber - 3.6%. Thought it being lower in protein might make it a good combo with the Innova Evo, which has so much protein. Also the grain is rice, which Chris does well on. ******** So will see how the Innova Evo Reduced Fat kibble and the Innova Senior canned go. Natalie |

Isn't it amazing the variety of diets that work well for our guys? And what lenghts we'll go to for our babies. Sometimes when I shop there is more in my basket for the hounds than for me. Chicken breast, veggies and pears for Winnie...chicken liver and ice cream sandwiches for Reuben (ulcer dog) and beef liver and cheese for everyone

Starz was getting a little plump. I cut her back to 1/2 can of low fat turkey and vegetable (pro-Plan) mixed with 1 cup of Blue weight loss kibble. She also gets a tsp of pet glucose control (Vitamin Research Products - Pets) sprinkled on her food. Recently she opened the jar and ate waht was left. Ginny

Treu is 122 LB Rottweiler. She is on 12 units of Humulin R 2x day time, 2x 12 and 1/2 at night time. Treu is 10 years old and therefore I reduced the protein in the diet to protect the kidneys. I found that the diet Margo developed for Alex works very well with this insulin. 100 g brown rice, 100 grams boiled or roasted chicken, 130 grams of green beans and broccolli 4 times daily. Vitamins, digestive enzymes, chromium, salmon oil. BG is steady with this diet. Alena and Treu

Taz weighs 13.4 lbs. She gets 6u of Vetsulin twice a day and eats home-cooked. We seem to be doing better with 1/4c cooked oatmeal, 1.5 oz of cooked chicken and 1 oz of very lean ground beef.

So will see how the Innova Evo Reduced Fat kibble and the Innova Senior canned go.
Natalie ****************************************** I just bought a big bag of the Regular Chicken/Turkey Innova Evo dry today. Natalie, do you mix the canned to make it more palatable for Chris? Lena will eat absolutely anything. I think it's a radical change in protein and fat from her Natural Balance with cottage cheese, but I will try it for awhile. I love the Innova canned food for all my other dogs and puppies, so Lena gets about a Tbl. of that as well with each meal. Since DX, her coat has never been the same. It is drier and does not have the fullness I would expect from a spayed female who previously grew tons of hair. This is why I chose the high fat content EVO vs. the reduced fat, which is still a generous amound (15%) I have wondered about cushings (are we all paranoid?), but I think she is wonderfully regulated and her weight is good, so I don't want to go looking for more trouble! Do you think this 28% fat is ridiculous or could it help her coat. She gets salmon oil alternated with Dermcaps and is on Norwegian Kelp, Pet Naturals vitamins with digestive enzymes and colostrum. I also added a joint support vitamin to her regimen. The hair quality and quantity thing is not vanity, as I believe it is a reflection of their health. She has always been glistening and beautifully coated. I realize she has a disease, but I just want to help her be as healthy as possible. Monica |

Re: Poll: food and insulin, question for Natalie!

Monica, I didn't stay with the Innova Evo. I had some kibble - both regular and reduced fat - and some canned Senior. The Senior canned had an unusual fiber source and Chris did not tolerate it well at all - gave him gas and diarrhea - so we stopped using the Senior canned pretty quickly.
At the time, I think I was looking for a way to eliminate or reduce the cottage cheese. I might have to go back and read my own post to remember why I was interested in the Innova kibble! :) I subsequently tried California Natural canned Chicken and Rice (same maker as Innova) and that's what I wound up using, again mixing it half and half with cottage cheese. In the end, I decided to stick with the cottage cheese and quit trying to find a replacement for it. With Chris' sensitive system, I liked the California Natural because it's a "simple" food. Meat, rice, vitamins and minerals. Nothing in it that Chris was likely to have a reaction to. So far, it's worked great for him. So many of the other quality foods have all kinds of stuff in them and Chris has had so many reactions to seemingly innocuous things that simpler was better for him. I'm surprised Lena's coat has not glossed up despite the salmon oil and DermCaps.... How long has she been on those? Chris' coat got dry when he ate WD but adding some vegetable oil took care of it. If she's been on all those oil supplements for a while and her coat still has not improved, it's worth considering other causes. I have seen dogs who had some allergies to the insulin preparation - not sure if it was the preservatives or the insulin itself - and the coat looked shabby until they changed insulins. Thyroid and Cushings are two other possibilities. Might be worth doing some blood work if her coat does not improve as with all the vitamins and oils she's getting I would expect her coat to be pretty nice. Chris' is very soft, when he's had a bath at least! Natalie |
