He gets fed at 7am and 7pm and has brown rice, chicken breast and some of his usual canned dog food. He is a very fussy eater and we are simply delighted that he eats at set times. Vet said it is far more important that he eats at this stage than trying prescription food which he refuses so far! He has 2 shots of Caninsulin (5iu) ....one after each meal. Still early days. Less scared than I was, but this on top of his epilepsy! Bless him. Just pleased I'm his mummy!!! Oh, and we are in England!

She also gets the steroid drops for her cataracts every day.

Weight is 80 lbs. He eats it like a horse...he's always eaten well, but this stuff makes him crazy!

She had been fed lean chicken or beef with a little cheese and brown rice. Now, she eats hardly anything. The Vet switched her to W/D but she walks the other way when she gets a whiff. We also tried the Royal Canin Controlled (canned). She ate a little when first introduced but now won't eat it either. I've been pouring over what everyone is feeding their dogs on this forum. I tried a tbsp. of nonfat cottage cheese with chicken, broccoli, and brown rice but she just licked the food to get the cottage cheese. I'm getting pretty desperate now. I was wondering how you prepared the turkey gravy you feed your dog. I'm baking turkey breast right now to put with brown rice and broccoli to see if she'll eat that. I need to get her on a constant diet soon or we're in big trouble. Thanks. Sada

He gets 6 units of Caninsulin in the morning and 4 units in the evening. He is fed 1/2 cup Medi-Cal low calorie for breakfast and 1 cup of Medi-Cal low calorie kibble for dinner. Plus he is allowed 4 Medi-Cal treats per day and the occasional spear of broccoli or cauliflower.

I was wondering if you just tossed the food together, chopped it altogether in the food processor, or blended it? Also, I see that several people use parmesan cheese to help flavor food. I was wondering what parmesan did to help?

We were feeding him 2x a day, but that didn't cut it, so now we feed him Hills WD dry, he gets "6" 1/4 cups a day. "1" tsp of pumpkin mixed twiced a day. Sometimes more dry food. He also gets weight control biscuits, about 4 a day. He will even wake us up during the night to eat. Was every 2 hours, now he's only waking us up 2x a night. He's not over weight, in fact every 2 weeks when he goes for his curve, he's lost an ounce or 2. Not sure if this is what I should be doing, but there is never a quiet moment with him. All he wants is food. My husband says, we mean nothing to him unless we have food.

Is there a difference in different types of insulin? Do you boil or bake your meat? Cindy ( l'm new ) and l have a 9 1/2 year female Jack Russell with Pituitary Cushings and she got diagnose with Diabetes and she is on 3 unit's of canininsulin. I'm really having a hard time feeding her, she just turn's her nose up at everything except what we eat. Cindy

More people will see it and give you helpful advice. There are several people who have furbabies with Cushings and diabetes. There are differences in insulin. I use Humulin N 2x daily which is based on humans. My little Molly Marie is very fussy with food so when I changed diet I had to first liquify it and feed with a baby medicine syringe. Eventually we made it oatmeal consistency and I forcefully spoon fed her. That way I could control how much she ate and could give her full insulin dosage. She has only had two curves done and is pretty much regulated. Now Molly will eat on her own but I still sit with her to ensure every bite is eaten. Sada, Molly Marie, and Tobias

I am extremely picky as to what type of kibble and canned food (if any) I purchase. She was initially using Royal Canin Mini 30, mixed with Royal Canin Mini Light. I have since begun to use the Royal Canin Light and have gradually begun to try Merrick Cowboy Dinner as it has a low glycemic index. I poach salmon, tuna, lean beef, chicken, liver. In an emergency I use Wysong 95% meat canned food, but haven't used this since her diabetes diagnosis. I have tried the Merrick canned foods due to the low glycemic index and she seems to like it, so does my two year old healthy male Westie. My vet does not seem to be an advocate of the prescription diets, stating most dogs dislike them and he mentioned Merrick. He advised that fiber is an integral aspect of managing a diabetic dog. Any other Westie lovers out there?

Their insulin dosages have actually gone down since switching them to the Merrick diet. We use Humulin N. We don't use a combination of Humulin R and Humulin N anymore to keep them level. They do fine with the Merrick and their shots timed 12 hrs apart. The only problem we had was Chili getting into an Oatmeal cookie, with raisins, left in my husbands briefcase. After my heartattack and murder threat we rushed Chili to the vet and he recovered fine. Mom and Dad will try not to do anything so stupid again. ( Cindy Anthem, AZ

SIMON is a lhasa poo..25 lbs and I have been trying to regulate him...The humlin N changes daily (up or down 1 unit. I am only testing his urine glucose at this point. My vet said only in the am. He eats at 7 and 7. I home cook for him.lean chicken, liver ( he loves liver)oatmeal, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, green beans and mixed vegs.. Can anyone tell me how long it took to regulate their dog..? He has yet to have a middle range number..usually negative ...Is that bad????? He had been high 2 weeks ago.but 5 and 6 units is where i am now.....I hope I can get him regulated..Thanks..Susee

She went into the vet with breath like nail polish remover. They made the diagnosis and we started treating with 7 units of NovilinN twice a day. Her new diet is 1 1/2 cups Hill's W/D twice daily. She weighs 28 lbs. after losing a considerable amount and needs to loose more. She had been eating Purina Beneful in a self feed, as much as she wanted, etc....I have been amazed at how well these scheduled feedings are working. On Fri. her insulin was increased to 9 units. The vet wanted her to use HumilinN, I already had NovilinN that is still good and would otherwise have beem thrown out. He has said we may still need to switch to the Humilin. Everything I have read and the pharmamcist assured me they are interchangeable. Can anyone help me with this question? She also may have Cushings and he said we must first treat the diabetes and we'll deal with the other once she is better. We are now on day 7 of this and the difference in her is amazing, so I feel that all will be ok.

Simon is currently at 6 units 2x a day of Humulin N..I am testing his urine in the am and I think we are getting close.WE go to the vet tomorrow.I am curious to see what she says. I do not know the answer to your question about interchangeable insulins.. Are you certain your dog has cushings? Did you have the proper test to confirm that?? Please let me know. There is an awesome website for Cushings and these people are very educated..Please read all you can BEFORE any Cushings treatment...They may have saved my pets life..as we were not having the proper care..It is www.caninecushings.net. He is judging by the fat and how she carries it. She has a round belly and thin face and legs. I have been reading and will continue to do so. Hoping all is going to be OK with your baby, as well.
