Re: Poll: food and insulin | ||

Xena was a 120 lb Rottweiller when she suddenlt went to 60lbs and was diagnosed with diabetes. She was 3 at the time. She is now 5. She is on Vetsulin 34 u a day and W/D. My understanding is W/d should not be given to a grossly underweight dog. The Vet upped her to 14 cups a day. Forbade me to give her anything else ( ie veggies etc). She is constantly hungry. she will eat paper ,dirt, twigs, anything she can find. She is also very active. She has not gained one ounce , instead lost a few more.. I want to take her off that and feed her something else. I notice that most posts are veggie heavy. She loves veggies and fruit. Any suggestions? I looked at some comparisions of different foods. and saw Iams Weight Control and Purina Fit and Trim, the latter being more close to the same ingredients in W/D. Thanks Lynne

wow that sure is a ton of weight loss.. Is she regulated now and has she been?? How active is she...When did you have the last curve??? Could she be running high?
The reason I ask is because....before my Simon was diagnosed he had a voracious appetite.lost 5 lbs (he is 25lbs nowand it is better or should I say calmed down..but he is new to insulin and diabetes ( one month) You just can't fill him up???? wow Susee and Simon |

My vet tests her and mostly she is good under 200 now.. the lowest was 70. She was 487 at one point. She likes to run and play with Little Dog with Big Feet.. Poor thing never got a real name. When she first got sick she wasnt eating much, just drinking a ton of water.
I tried ,after reading the other posts..her on some ground up turkey breast cooked in broth with garlic .. then I put in some green beans and zuchinni, and some of the fit and trim kibble,,, it totaled about 6 cups for the day and sure enough it was enough for her.. no paper eating. Call it wishful thinking but she looks better today,, much more alert and shiny. Thanks I learned more on this site than I have from my vet.. WD may be right for some dogs but I dont think it was the right one for a grossly underweight dog. 14 cups of WD was bloating her out and not doing any good. |

Hi-
My formerly 102 pound Rott mix is down to 79. Started on treatment 2 weeks ago. He was just upped to 2x20 Vestulin, 2 cups B/D + 1/2 can B/D 2x daily. I am going broke! We have spent just under $500 on vet, food & medication. Is this a temporary adjustment? Any suggestions for keeping the costs down? |

Happy to report that after taking control . I took Xena off WD. My vet finally agreed WD was not doing it for her. Last week her glucose was 479 (that is where is mostly is) and 62 lbs. This past Saturday she had gained 4 lbs and her glucose was 88. She is getting 4 cups in the AM and PM of Purina Fit and Trim. WE compared ingredients and they are almost the same. WD is chicken peanut hulls and Fit and Trim is turkey and soy bean hulls. both have high fiber. She gets milk thistle and Brewers Yeast,. 24u 2x a day of vetsulin. keeping fingers she stays good...

Hershey's mom, Buster is a 22 pound lhasa diagnosed a month ago. He also was waking me up at all hours of the night. He either wanted more to eat or to go out. We have worked on trying to get him to the point that he feels well and is sleeping thru the night. I think we finally reached that point. It's been 5 nights of him sleeping all night. He even wants to get in bed like he did before he got sick. We started with the purina dco and have stuck with that as the dry food. At first we continued with the old zd canned and tried several others. But we finally hit on the Merrick low glycimic canned foods. He not only loves it but it seems to be working real well as he is happy now and running around again and smiling. He wants to cuddle and be the furbaby he used to be. I spoke with the vet about this canned food and he said to at first be careful as it has less calories and may cause him to be on the lower side of blood sugars. I am trying to get the nerve to do the blood sugars. His eyes and skin alergies also are better. I believe due to more stable blood sugar. We can sleep at night at our house now and it is great.

Re: Diabetic and chocolate?? | ||

You might be experiencing Keto-acidosis - causes dog to act unstable and walk like he is drunk - had a very bad experience with my Rat Terrier Frankie - had to hospitalize him to recover.
Your vet can do the test with a clean urine sample - ketones can be deadly - get the test done. keiith kohnle |

How in the world do you get your pets to eat veggies??? Do they naturally like them or did they have to learn?

Re: Biotic ph+ and Biotic ph- Anyone tried these?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (RESPONSE FROM WYSONG) Thank you for your recent e-mail. First, to speak generally, for greatest health Dr. Wysong recommends following the Optimal Health Program, which includes supplements, rotating through the various Wysong diets (dry, canned and non-thermally processed), and whole fresh foods to provide healthy variety. In reply to your specific concerns: The Biotic pH+ and Biotic pH- are supplements for cats or dogs with urinary problems such as infections and crystals. They are not specifically designed for a diabetic cat or dog, unless the pet has underlying urinary problems. Biotic pH- is for pets that are prone to struvite crystals (urine that is too alkaline) and Biotic pH+ is for pets prone to oxalate or urate crystals (urine that is too acidic). The supplement you are currently using, C-Biotic, is fine for a dog with diabetes. For dogs that are diabetic or pre-diabetic, Dr. Wysong feels that moving towards a more archetypal feeding pattern (increased protein and fat and decreased grain carbohydrates) helps to better regulate a dogs natural carnivorous metabolism, as meat protein and fat are what their bodies were designed to most readily digest. Archetype (99+% meat) supplemented with the All Meat Canned Diets (supplemented with the Call of the Wild) would be especially beneficial for a dog with diabetes. If you need to supplement with a dry food, Growth or the Optimal Performance would be the best choice. Feeding a higher meat diet will also help ward off urinary problems. The Wysong Rx Diet for diabetes is Diabid. We would recommend to supplement the diets mentioned above with the Rx diet. You can order Rx diets directly as long as you have your veterinarian fax us a prescription. In following the Optimal Health Program, a supplement to emphasize would be Carboprin and Panzyme. Carboprin supports sugar balance and Panzyme supports the health of the pancreas as well as providing additional enzymes to enhance digestion. Do not be misled by foods that claim 100% complete and balanced (www.wysong.net/dontbefool...te.shtml). Even though we may not make such a claim on a label, our foods have as much and more nutrition than any on the market. (We always recommend rotation and variety, never feeding one diet). Regardless of how good a food is, it should not be fed at every meal. That is why we do not make the claim, not because our foods are deficient in any way. We wish you and your companion animals the best of health. Please see below for more information. FURTHER HELP v See the following Wysong literature to learn more about almost any topic related to health: Don't Be Fooled The pet food industry abounds with myth, lore, fable, deception, half-truths, incompetence and even fraud. There is good too, but you, the consumer, will have to sort that out. Here is a quick PhD primer that will give you insight very few people have. My diabetic Shiba Inu (Nikko) eats Hill's W/D dry dog food, one cup twice a day with veggies added. He gets 7 units of Vetsulin twice a day. He was on
Humulin when I got him a year ago but it wasn't controlling his diabetes very well and I changed him to the Vetsulin end of May. He's doing very well
on it now and his urine sugar is always negative when I check it. For snacks he gets Nutro Senior Biscuits for good joint health and also Cinnabone dog treats
(Sold Gold Pet Health Products). Also baby carrots for treats, which he loves. He was overweight when I got him but is now at a healthy weight of 30 lbs.
I also give both my dogs Flax Oil and wheatgerm in their dinners and sprinkle a little garlic/brewer's yeast on their food to prevent fleas

Shaggys feedings | ||
|
Shaggy is currently 30 lbs, eating 1/2 can of Science Diet W/D mixed with a lot of water, and 1/4 cup of plain non-fat yogurt twice each day.
He had been eating a full can of W/D and no yogurt, but as his blood sugar started becoming more regulated, he started eating less, and since he went on the W/D he has had hard stools. So with his insulin when he was eating a full can of W/D he was on 12 units of Novilin N twice a day. Now that he is eating less w/d but added yogurt, we are trying 11 units, but will get an official blood glucose reading at the vets in a few days. I will have to give you an update then. Also, I know that digestion can become dependent on yogurt, so I don't imagine Shaggy will stay on the yogurt, so we might end up with him eating about 3/4 of a can of W/D twice a day, without the yogurt.
Sandy and Shaggy
Cocker Spaniel Mix; 12 Years Old; 30lbs, Diagnosed October 5, 2008 1 can of W/D twice a day; 12 units Novolin N - twice daily About to start home testing, getting a meter through the mail. |
