My Lady who is a 10 yr old Lhasa Apso was just diagnosed with Diabetes last week. So we've been to the vet every day for her curve testing etc.. We go back on Tuesday in the afternoon of the week around 4 pm to see what her blood sugar level is ... The problem I have been having since all this started is.. getting her to eat!....Thank goodness she doesn't throw up or anything she just decides one day she'll eat the next she doesn't want to. The vet tried giving her the W/D food and that was a disaster.. She refused to eat it after the first day... SO then we tried other foods an she refused them also. Finally my vet said give her any kind of food she likes to eat because we need to get her on a regular feeding schedule so we can regulate her dose of insulin.. We started her out at 15 units of Vetsulin every 12 hours. Then we dropped to 14 then 12 then 10.....The last few days she's been eating fine. We went back to the Pedigree canned food she usually loves and were having no problems until today.. Now she's snubbing her nose at ...I have been able to get her to eat some and will try again in a little while as I have to give her a shot at 10 pm this evening but I dont understand why she is having such a hard time now wanting food.... My brains and nerves at this point are almost fried.... I just wish this was all regulated and she was OK.. I don't know how she feels because she can't tell me.. She acts normal in every other way so it's hard to tell.. No more uncontrollable peeing, no more drinking massive amounts of water etc.... Any advice? Thanks.... Robyn AKA Ladys Momma

My Sissy was a Lhasa Apso, so I know how stubborn they can be. When they don't want to eat, it is usually because they feel bad. What do her curves look like? If she is really high at mealtime, she won't want to eat. If she is really low, that can be even more trouble. The reason I say this is because Sissy weighed 16 pounds when she was diagnosed and she varied between 6-9 units of Vetsulin 2X a day. It sounds like Lady may be going low. How much does she weigh? Have you thought about home testing like human diabetics do? You will save time and lots of money, plus you will have more control over what is really going on. The most important thing right now is to get Lady to eat so that she can get her shot. Does she eat canned or kibble? The Pedigree is not ideal, but if she is going to eat it, go with it for now. You can add green beans, some cooked shredded chicken, chopped broccoli, canned pumpkin, plain yogurt, cottage cheese, Parmesan cheese and my personal favorite - tuna water. Take a can of water packed tuna and pour some of the juice over Lady's food. These things do not raise blood glucose levels in most dogs. We have ALL had the picky dog. Matching a food the dog will eat with the insulin is a slow ongoing process. Just keep coming back and asking questions. We will help you all we can. I don't have Lady's curve numbers but I will ask about them tomorrow..I am also going to ask about home testing.. I am a little nervous about doing that but if my vet will show me how and where to take the blood from her I would like to see if myself and my husband can do it without hurting her because my vet isn't a 5 minute drive .. it takes a good 30 to 35 mins to get there every time and lately it's like we live there..See thats whats worries me.. I have no way of knowing how she is feeling , is her sugar to low or to high but I know I have to get her to eat something because I have to give her the shots...We have to be at the vet tomorrow afternoon at 4pm for more blood testing and I will ask for copies of her curve testing and have more information to post.. Thanks again Sissy for replying. .I am so lost in all this an so stressed out from the worry...

If Lady is 10 years old, I'll bet she has some of those old dog warty things on her somewhere. Or maybe a callus on her elbow? Some members here use the inside of the lip or the ear. There is also a tail stick method - Terry (Iammomtomissy) is very famililar with that. Sissy had a big warty thing on her back - it had no feeling - and I just used that. Did your vet explain a hypo? This is when the blood sugar goes too low and it is very dangerous. If Lady is acting lethargic, confused, shaking or any other really wierd behavior, keep some syrup or Karo on hand and get some into her ASAP. Follow that up in a little while with a protein snack or some meat baby food. Hypo can kill, so it is really important not to let her blood sugar go too low. Unless Lady is a really hefty Lhasa, 10 units is a lot. Especially at the beginning. At some point, you will want to find a food that is better for her diabetes. Look at the labels on food - anything with -ose has sugar in it. What are you giving for treats? Sissy was a 15 1/2 year old Lhasa Apso. She was diagnosed with diabetes on September 21, 2007. I'm worried that you might be having a rebound situation.... The amount of units you started off with seam way to high for your dog... Resulting in some really low ( to low ) numbers and will make them feel sick and not want to eat... Did you vet say why such a large dosage????? I use twice the amount you're using but my Killian is 100lbs...... Also I'm on Novelin N .. I like it much better.... As for the food.... As long as your using so much insulin its OK to still use the pedigree .. Its not a good diet for a diabetic dog,, It will make there Bg rise... In your case that's a good thing because of the insulin dosage..... Once you get on the right amount of insulin for your dogs weight then you need to go to the right food that works well with your insulin.... Diabetic dogs can not eat the same way they ate before.... Diet is very important.... If you read through some of the threads here you'll see the hunt for the perfect food is a constant concern..... Carb with make your dogs BG rise .... Not enough fiber will not carry over to the next shot..... I don't want to overwhelm you .. there is a lot to learn.... Were all here willing to share with you all we have learned..... First thing you need to do is ask your vet how many diabetic dogs he has cared for.... I'm concerned about that high dosage of Insulin........ JMO/ Killian 99 lb Pit Bull-DX with diabetes 11/10/06... 3 Hospital bouts with Pancreatitis.. Some Kero Syrup or pancake mix... Lady weighs at last check on Friday 23 pounds..Right now I've been limiting her treats to 3 per day.. I give her the Milk Bone Original Crunchy Dog Treats . Their real small with real bone marrow in the middle.. She gets one after her morning shot, one after her night time shot and one before bed..As for the 10 units per day of vetsulin.. I think he may even lower it more tomorrow. Will have to see what her numbers are.. On Friday afternoon at 330 pm it was 97 so he dropped her from 14 units 2 times a day to the 10...Now it's 915 pm Lady is due for her second shot at 10 pm and from what I can tell she looks really hungry... Does that mean her sugar is to high? To low? Just right? Uggh, I'm so confused

She may still be somewhat high or low, but not enough to make her feel bad. If she is high for a long period of time, you will notice the peeing and drinking again. Do you know about Ketodiastix? These strips are dipped in pee (yes, we talk a lot about pee and poop around here), and compared to the color chart on the bottle. You buy them at the drugstore, but you may have to ask for the Ketodiastix. They also measure ketones which means that the body is starting to digest muscle fiber because Lady is not getting enough nutrition from her food. I think your vet would have told you if she had ketones in her urine. Urine testing a not as accurate as blood testing, but it will give you an idea where she is. Do not use first morning pee - it has sat in the bladder all night. Sissy was a 15 1/2 year old Lhasa Apso. She was diagnosed with diabetes on September 21, 2007. That's the only way to see how the insulin is working with the food; a single test won't tell you anything useful when you are starting out. Being hungry can be due to high or low blood sugars, so that doesn't tell you much. I agree with Johanna, you may have a risk of rebound going on , and the swings from high to low and back can make them feel pretty crappy. Only a curve can tell you that. If you want to test at home, we can help you out! Most people here have had luck with blood testing, and others with urine testing (not as accurate as blood, but better than nothing for sure). The recommended starting dose for Vetsulin for her weight would be ~7U twice a day... so she is still higher than that. Hopefully your curve will tell you if that's too much. I would be careful with those treats - two of the first ingredients are wheat flour and sugar, so they will probably spike her blood sugar quite a bit. Grace Rolo: 12 year old Corgi-mix. 24lbs. Diagnosed August 24th, 2008. Cute as a button. Food: Orijen Senior (55g each meal) and Merrick canned Grammy's Pot Pie (50g each meal). Supplements: 1/2tsp Sasha's Blend once daily, 500mg cranberry extract once daily, 1/4tsp Eagle Pack Holistic Solution (digestive enzymes & probiotics) with each meal. Treats: Dogswell Chicken Jerky, Wellness Pure Rewards post-insulin, and frozen green beans. Insulin: Humulin N (NPH), 5.5U @ 8am and 8pm.

The high doses started off with I was told because her sugar kept rising the first week. Her first initial test her blood sugar was 497 she stayed at the vet all day for 4 days and each afternoon when they would test her sugar was goin down as expected but then would rise again into the 300's then the 200's etc... As for the food she's on, I agree.. Once she is set on an insulin dose I will look into other foods but the vet said right now its important that she's eating no matter what she's eating as long as she's eating.. Bad advice? As to how many diabetic dogs my vet has treated, I am fairly sure there has been many.. He's been a veterinarian for many many years, has a massive practice and is recommended throughout the county so Im not so worried that he's inexperienced and I also like that if I go in and tell him that I've been talking with other pet owners who's dogs have diabetes and this is what they suggest he will listen to me and if he agree's he will give the go ahead.... Oh , can you tell me, what does BG stand for? Thanks again for responding and the offer to help.. I feel I am lost in a sea of information and honestly my head is spinning....It helps to know others will be here if needed..

They were testing her every couple of hours..As for her treats I am going to be looking into getting something for her made for diabetics but something that has some taste so she won't feel left out.. I have 7 other dogs and she will SURELY notice if she's not getting something "special" thanks so much for your response... Sissy, Yes she seemed a little hungry so she finished the small amount of food she had left from her dinner... Strangely enough I have noticed something that I don't think is a good thing. .She doesn't seem to be drinking much water?!?!? Why would that be or is it normal? Maybe I was just so used to her drinking water non stop that this is normal now and it seems odd to me?

We all have diabetic dogs and with the help of each other and some good vets , we all get by. It will get easier, the beginning is the toughest. I think your vet started Lady out at too high a dose. Usually, we start a newly diagnosed diabetic out at a very low and safe dose and slowly over a period of weeks and months, work up to the dose needed to regulate. The high amount of insulin may have taken Lady's bg too low (always be sure to keep Karo, syrup, or honey within reach), and resulted in her poor appetite. Then to cut the dose by 2 Units, then another 2 Units all in one weeks time is not so good. Lady's body is most likely in chaos right now. BG ( or Bg) means 'blood glucose'- the amount of glucose in the dog's blood. A normal range would be AROUND 80-160, but every diabetic dog varies and we must sometimes aim for Bgs. that we know make our furbabies feel good and have a good quality of life. Some dogs live for years with consistently higher bgs.- 200+. You can buy Keto-Diastix (urine strips) at your local pharmacy, WalMart, etc. Dipped in the urine, they can tell you if Lady has 'KEYTONES' in her urine which means her Bgs. have been too high for a period of time and she needs immediate medical attention. Signs of too LOW Bgs. are: lethargy, confusion, weakness, wobbly head, seizure, and coma. We must always be very careful to watch for these signs. Home testing the blood can help prevent serious issues with Bgs. and it is highly recommended that you consider doing it. As for food, Pedigree is not the best, but if that's all she will eat now, go for it. Read our links on here about what we all feed our dogs for ideas good for Lady. Many homecook, but there are also many good quality foods out there to explore. Does Lady have any other medical issues? Is she spayed? I've never seen the ones with bone marrow in them, but they usually love good old Milkbones. Alot here use frozen green beans as treats and most dogs love those ( but not mine). Well, you seem to be on top of it and you are doing fine. Treats - many here use frozen green beans. Also, if you're looking for a good laugh in the middle of all this, Killiansmom can post her now famous recipe for chicken jerky! Seriously, I tried to buy treats at the pet store, but all of them seemed to have sugar of some sort in them. I found Chicken Chips - which had nothing in them but chicken - but found out they were made in China and there were problems with them. Frustrated, I just bought chicken breats, sliced them up thin and put them in my dehydrator overnight. In the morning - Wala - chicken jerky! Just breat the strips into small pieces. Lady will love it. They worked so well for Sissy that I still make them for Fritz. Is Lady getting canned or dry Pedigree? If she is getting canned, she will be getting some of her liquid there. My vet said Sissy should drink about 24 oz of water a day. However, she usually drank less than 2 cups because she was also getting canned. If you have water available, they will drink what they need. If you are really worried about it, you can measure it - I put 3 cups in Sissy's bowl every morning and measured what was left the next morning. That might be difficult with multiple dogs. If you don't think she is getting enough water, you can moisten kibble with it or put just a little beef or chicken broth in her water. Watch for sugar in the broth. Ive been so scared with all of this. I am sure you all know how that feels and I feel like I have some hope now. Some direction and its because of all of you and I can't not thank you enough!!....Killiansmom, yes I am LOL right now about the BG and I do feel like a dope..LOL! There were so many questions asked of me I will try and remember them all to answer.. Please forgive me if I don't remember them all, I am disabled. I have had chronic Lyme Disease for more than 15 years and my short term memory isn't the best... Someone asked if Lady had other health problems. No none that I know of.. As for cataracts, I will ask the doctor tomorrow to check, as for Ketones in her urin he didn't say anything but I will ask..As for chicken jerky, what a great idea!! I say that because my husband (who is also disabled) just got a dehydrater a few months ago and is always wanting to use it so he will LOVE making it for her.. He just baked home made treats for the dogs tonight.. He bakes for them a lot.. Always with all dog friendly foods and the dogs love them.. Deb, thanks for talking about the plain old milk bones.. My dogs do like those.. the small ones so I will look into those as well.. Sissy, Yes , Lady is getting the canned Pedigree now.. I've been giving her the chicken and beef although it seems she likes the chicken more... Lady just had her shot for tonight at 10 pm.. 10 units of vetsulin and for the first time she is actually snoring in over a week.. I am guessing this is a good sign... I keep annoying her though at night because after her shot I wake her up to check on her and check her alertness.... If I say cookie and she doesn't jump to attention I know something is wrong....Oh I was also asked if Lady was spayed.. Yes she is.... Thank you EVERYONE for ALL of our support.. I will post more tomorrow when we get back from the vet...

Homemade treats are great, we have lots of recipes for those here. Just watch the carbs (lesser is better) and NO sugar anywhere in them. Homemade chicken jerky is great and some here do that too and it is kind of a joke how that recipe came about. I'll let Johanna tell you that story. Let us know what the vet says. Just go armed with questions and don't leave without the answers. You are in control with this because you know Lady best. I have one question and you could of answer it. How many shots a day are you giving?? We all sounded just like you when we first got here. I thought I would kill Brandy in the first week it has been almost 3 years. Take a deep breath it will be ok. Dawn and the girls, Brandy is the diabetic and hypothyroid. Doberman 70 pounds. Born 06/04/2000 DX 06/04/2006. She is on a combination of regular insulin and N insulin and Soloxine. She eat California Natural Herring and Sweet Potato. Penny Non diabetic and hypothyroid. Doberman Lab mix 57 pounds. Born 07/04/1996. Is on Soloxine and eats Fromm Salamon Ala Vegetable.

I say this because NPH is way cheaper and can be bought with out a prescription.... Its also has a lot more units in the bottle.... Its also sold at wall mart pharmacy under the ReliOn name for $21.00 a bottle.... And the needles that go with it are $13.00 for 100... Its nice to have a extra bottle on hand always just in case .. Things Happen and you could drop a your bottle and not having back up scares me.... Also I find the NPH regulates the dogs easier and faster.... You will always have to give two shots !! that's a given... Next thing is to get a BG meter,,, I use the one touch ultra.. a human meter.... I then have it checked with my vets lab to see how much off from the lab blood it is... That way when I test I know how much to add for the right reading.... Blood testing is to me the only way to have control over this ... To me its not a option.... You can know so much just by testing...and I feel its the only way to know if the food is right, and if its working with the insulin.... It will tell you if your dog is going to high or to low.... Its so important... There is a lot to learn... But in time you will be giving the shot and talking on the phone and Multi tasking!! And giving some one new here advise.... Really this is not hard.. Its just overwhelming at first, but soon you will see its really not to hard at all... Ask anything and everything !!! If we have the answer so will you....
